Spot Faking Videos: TED 2018

So, now if you see Gandhi speaking about how he won the freedom for India, or if you see Newton taking one of the classes on gravity and physics, don’t be surprised. Although the innovations keep emerging, the Google stays on the top of the list of Silicon Valley Giants. Now, one of its employees has developed a software which can spot fake videos.

Google has always been interested in the Artificial Intelligence. The brain inspired project named Google Brain, A deep learning project part of Google X, was an attempt to achieve machine’s intelligence similar or equal to human-level. Alpha Go, which plays a game, Google now and Google assistant, self-driven cars, all these are to name a few. Now with this video faking software can bring a revolution in the world.

In the near future if you hear a fake news story and just to be sure you want a proof do not rely on the videos anymore. According to Google engineer Supasorn Suwajanakorn — who has developed a custom software which, when fed with the right input, can create a realistic fake video that mimics the way a person speaks, by closely observing existing footage of their mouth and teeth to create the perfect lip-sync.

“I let a computer watch 14 hours of pure Obama video, and synthesized him talking” Suwajanakorn said while sharing his shockingly convincing software at the TED Conference in Vancouver on Wednesday. If this work succeeds commercially, we can only imagine how this can be used. It will be a completely new discovery in the world of Artificial Intelligence.

Such technology could be used to create virtual versions of those not present at the shooting of the video or have passed by – grandparents could be asked for advice; actors can be returned to the screen; great teachers give lessons, or authors read their works aloud, according to Suwajanakorn. The only hassle is to feed this custom software with the proper feed, in the experiment, it was Obama.

Like every technology, this custom software will also have its backdrop. Without countermeasures this technology cannot be made public as, if it falls in the wrong hands, many crimes can be committed starting from harassing the individual to using them in political scenarios. The extreme example can be a video of a political leader threatening the world with the nuclear weapons which in turn can lead to a world war three. So the creator of this program, is taking measures against this and is working on a new software ‘Reality Defender’, which will be able to identify a fake video. The application will automatically scan web browsers for manipulated media content and videos and allow users to report it, as well as monitor the videos on the web.

“These results seemed intriguing, but at the same time troubling; it concerns me, the potential for misuse,” said Suwajanakorn. “Video manipulation will be used in malicious ways unless counter-measures are in place, We have to make it very risky and cost-ineffective. There is a long way to go before we can effectively model people” were his words to AFP.
