athenahealth API Integration for Practices and Digital Health Teams

Your practice runs on athenaOne, but intake forms, scheduling tools, billing reports and patient apps live somewhere else. Staff re-key the same data twice, and every workaround adds a place where PHI can leak. We build the integration layer that connects athenaOne to the systems your team actually uses, so data moves once, accurately, with an audit trail.

Who This Is For

  • Practice operations leaders who want intake, scheduling, referrals or reporting to stop depending on copy and paste.
  • Digital health founders and CTOs building a product that needs to read from or write to athenaOne for their customers' practices.
  • Multi-location groups that need one view across several athenaOne practices and departments.

FHIR R4 or athenaOne APIs? Usually Both.

athenahealth offers standards-based FHIR R4 APIs, including endpoints certified under the ONC Cures Act rules, alongside its own athenaOne APIs for practice-management and workflow data such as departments, scheduling and billing. FHIR keeps an integration portable if you add other EHRs later. The athenaOne APIs cover workflows the standard doesn't reach yet. We choose per data element during discovery and document the decision in the integration spec before any code is written.

How an athenahealth Integration Project Runs

  1. Free review and discovery. We map the workflow, list every data element, choose FHIR or athenaOne APIs for each, and confirm the access model: one practice or many, system-to-system or user-authorized.

  2. Developer access and sandbox. We help you register the app in athenahealth's Developer Portal and build against the Preview sandbox. For production access to non-certified APIs, athenahealth requires a contract and a technical specification review. We prepare the technical details and support you through that process.

  3. The right authorization model. athenahealth uses OAuth 2.0: 2-legged (client credentials) for back-end services, or 3-legged (user authorization, including SMART App Launch) for provider- or patient-facing apps. Each app registration uses one model, so we decide this early.

  4. Build behind a clean boundary. The athenahealth connection lives in its own service layer, so the rest of your application doesn't care which EHR is underneath, and adding another EHR later is a smaller project.

  5. Test the unhappy paths. Pagination on large pulls, rate limits and retries, token expiry, partial data and patient matching are all exercised in the sandbox before production.

  6. Go live and monitor. We switch to production credentials, coordinate deployment with the practice, roll out in stages with alerts on failed syncs, and hand over a runbook your team can own.

Timelines depend on the workflows, data and approvals involved. Every project is scoped after a free review, and you get a written estimate before work begins.

Built for PHI From the First Commit

  • Encryption in transit and at rest; secrets in a managed vault, never in code
  • Role-based access and least-privilege API scopes
  • Audit logs of who accessed or changed what
  • No PHI in application logs, error trackers or staging data
  • A Business Associate Agreement signed before we touch PHI

Our engineering processes are covered by a SOC 2 Type II audit, and we've been an Official Laravel Partner, recognized by the Laravel core team, for years. That's useful proof when your security team asks the hard questions, but the integration design above is what keeps your data safe.

Why Teams Choose Web Mavens for EHR Integration

  • One in-house team, end to end. Laravel-certified engineers, with US-based project leadership in Austin, TX and full US-hours overlap. If a developer isn't the right fit, our free replacement guarantee covers you.
  • The integration and the app around it. Many integration vendors stop at the data pipe. We also build the portal, dashboard or workflow tool that uses the data.
  • Ready for the next EHR. A vendor-neutral boundary means your second integration costs less than your first.

athenahealth Integration FAQ

You need an app registered in athenahealth's Developer Portal and the practice's authorization to access its data. Production access to athenaOne's non-certified APIs requires a contract with athenahealth and a technical specification review, and listing on the athenahealth Marketplace involves the Marketplace Partner program. We'll tell you which path applies during the free review.
Usually both: FHIR R4 for standard clinical data and portability, and athenaOne APIs for scheduling, billing and other practice-management workflows that FHIR doesn't cover.
Yes. Multi-practice integrations need per-practice authorization and data scoping, and we design for that from the start.
Yes. Apps registered in athenahealth's Developer Portal get access to a Preview sandbox, and we build and test there before moving to production credentials.
It depends on the workflows, data elements and approvals involved. Every project is scoped after a free review, and you get a written estimate before work begins.
Yes, before any access to PHI.
Yes. We start with a code and architecture review, then give you a plan to stabilise or rebuild the risky parts.
